Two ways to split a PDF

The split tool has two tabs. Which one you need depends on whether you want the whole document divided, or just one chosen part of it.

Auto split: divide the whole document

Auto split handles the math for you and produces several files in one go:

• Split every N pages — for example, every 5 pages produces files of 5 pages each (the last file may be shorter if the total doesn’t divide evenly)
• Split into N equal parts — divides the document into a specific number of files with (almost) the same number of pages
• One page per file — every page becomes its own PDF

A live preview shows the page range of every file before you click Split, so you can check the result first.

Manual selection: pick the pages yourself

In Manual selection you see thumbnails of every page and click the ones you want (shortcuts are available for all, none, odd, even, first half and second half). The selected pages download together as one new PDF, in their original order. Use it when you want one specific part of the document; to get several different parts, run it once for each part.

How to split a PDF into two documents

The quickest way is Auto split with “Split into N equal parts” set to 2: you get two files, each with half of the pages (if the page count is odd, the first file gets the extra page).

If the break shouldn’t fall in the middle, use Manual selection twice: select the pages that belong in the first document and download them, then select the pages of the second document and download again. The “First half” and “Second half” shortcuts can save you some clicking.

How to break down a large PDF file

A large PDF is easiest to break down into pieces of a fixed size. Choose Auto split, then “Split every N pages” — for example, every 20 pages for a long report — and the tool produces one PDF per group.

If a file-size limit is the reason, keep in mind that splitting does not recompress anything: the size of each part depends on the pages it contains, and pages with large images weigh the most. If the parts are still too big, run them through the Compress tool or read how to email a large PDF.

Split vs. Extract: which one do you need?

Splitting divides the whole document into multiple files. If you only need a small selection of specific pages — not a division of the entire document — extracting those pages is simpler. The Extract tool lets you click exactly the pages you want and download just those as a single new PDF.
