Practical use cases

  • Removing your name and software details before sharing a document publicly.
  • Cleaning a file before sending it to someone outside your organization.
  • Checking what a PDF reveals about who made it.

What it does — and doesn’t — remove

It removes the document information and XMP metadata. It does not change page content, so a name written on a page stays; and it does not edit embedded images (which may carry their own data) or attachments.

Common problems

  • The tool says no metadata was found: the file has no document information to remove, which can happen with PDFs produced by some tools.
  • A name still appears in the file: it is probably part of the page content, an embedded image or an attachment, which this tool does not change.
  • The file will not load: password-protected or corrupted PDFs cannot be opened by PDFDistrict.
