Points are rounded. One inch is 25.4 mm and 72 PDF points, so points = inches × 72 and inches = mm ÷ 25.4.
A4 vs. US Letter: which should you use?
- A4 follows the ISO 216 standard and is the normal paper size in most countries.
- US Letter is the normal size in the United States and Canada, and is also widely used in Mexico.
- If the document will be printed, use the size of the paper in the printer. If it is only read on screen, either works.
- A4 is slightly taller and narrower than Letter, so a document moved between the two may reflow or print with small margin differences.
Why A-series sizes are handy
A-series sizes keep the same proportions: cut an A4 sheet in half and you get two A5 sheets; double it and you get A3. That is why an A4 document scales cleanly to A5 booklets or A3 posters.
